BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of frown lines, crow's feet, or forehead lines in adults ages 18 to 65. Safely used for over a decade, it works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes lines to form between the eyebrows, around the eyes, or on the forehead. BOTOX® Cosmetic can also rejuvenate the appearance of skin on the neck.
Why should I consider BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Years of squinting, concentrating, or frowning can cause your skin to furrow and crease. As time passes, your skin becomes less elastic and those moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, or forehead lines remain…even when your muscles aren't contracting. Frown lines may make you look angry and unapproachable, while other lines can make you seem older.
Is there anyone who should not be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Do not take BOTOX® Cosmetic if you are allergic to any of its ingredients (see Medication Guide for ingredients), including albumin, if you've had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as Myoblock® or Dysport®, or of you have a skin infection at the injection site.
Will I still be able to make facial expressions?
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you've "had work done." The muscle activity that causes frown lines between brows, crow's feet, or forehead lines is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows, on your forehead, or around your eyes.
How quickly will I see a difference?
Within 24 to 48 hours you may notice a softening in the appearance of the targeted area. The area may continue to improve for up to three weeks.
How long can I expect my results to last?
Results have been shown to last up to 3-6 months. Your own results may vary – we can discuss expectations and future appointments during a consultation. Many patients find that after a few injections, the results last longer overall. To maximize results, you can combine BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy with other treatments, including a facelift [link], microdermabrasion [link], and others.
Is there anything I need to tell my doctor?
You should inform us of all your medical conditions. If you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves, such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease), or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, you may be at increased risk of serious side effects, including difficulty swallowing and respiratory compromise, from typical doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Also tell us about all your medical conditions, including if you have had, or plan to have, surgery on your face or otherwise, or weakness of forehead muscles, such as trouble raising your eyebrows, drooping eyelids, or any other abnormal face change. Inform us if you are pregnant or about to become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding. (It is not known if BOTOX® Cosmetic can affect an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.) Finally, tell us about any and all prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you may be taking.
What is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic like? Is it painful?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting, we will numb the area with anesthetic cream. The needle used is extremely fine. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
For one week before and after treatment, do not take aspirin or ibuprofen-like medications.
What should I do after my appointment?
- No bending down, lying down, or rubbing the treated areas for three hours.
- Again, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen-like medications for one week.
- Avoid massaging or excessively touching the treated area.
- Use expression (i.e. contract the treated muscles) as much as possible.
- Avoid working out the same day of the treatment.
- Call our office at (977) 414-8346 if you have any questions or concerns regarding your treatment.
Will a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic affect my skin color?
We've successfully treated men and women of varying ethnicities and skin types. Because BOTOX® Cosmetic works only on the underlying muscles, there's no concern of it affecting your skin color or texture.
What are the possible side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used for over 10 years and in millions of patients, with an excellent safety record. As with any treatment, however, side effects can occur. Possible side effects include pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, neck pain, and eye or vision problems. Some side effects are serious.
